Clean install of ATI/AMD drivers

Posted in gaming, windows, news on July 24th, 2008 by equk

atilogoI have noticed a lot of people seem to have numerous problems with the ATi/AMD Catalyst drivers. The errors can be caused by a myriad of issues. Sometimes it's as simple as a file being missing and other times it's a registry key.

If you already have CCC installed I am guessing you already have installed the latest version of the .NET framework.

Programs you will need to download & install:
Driver Cleaner Pro
CCleaner
SuperShell
(optional) Latest ATI/AMD CCC Drivers

1. Remove the drivers using the ATI Software Uninstall Utility.
2. It will ask you to restart the system, restart but go into safemode.
3. Login to a administrator account.
4. Start Driver Cleaner Pro and select " Select multiple cleaning filters"
Add these to the list: "ATI , ATI CCC , ATI Uninstall Utility , ATI WDM"
Click Start to clean.
5. Run CCleaner & do a registry check (to check for registry links to removed files).
Select Fix All to fix the errors.
6. Now you will need to run supershel.exe
Once in the shell, run regedit
Now go to HKLM/Software/
Remove ATI & ATI Technologies
Now everything should be clean.
7. Reboot into windows as you usually would and install the required ATI/AMD CCC drivers.

New Mouse - Razer Deathadder

Posted in gaming, windows on May 25th, 2008 by equk

I decided to buy a new mouse as my 3year old diamondback seems really worn out. The buttons have shiney parts where the rubber grip has worn thru, the rubber has gone a yellow off-white colour and the side buttons seem less responsive.

I love razer mice and decided on the deathadder as the size and shape of the lachesis is smaller than the diamondback and also seems to have a lot of bad press with all the bugs and overall shape/design. I have had razer mice since 1999 when I bought one of the first Boomslang 1000's (I still have it in original packaging and a CoA showing it is one of the first). I admit, I have had a logitech mx500 and a microsoft intelli v3 before I got my diamondback, but overall I think razer mice are pretty superior.

So far the Deathadder seems amazingly accurate and responsive.

I have now finished writing my review, so for more information please have a read.

Windows Mobile 6 on Dell Axim x50v

Posted in windows, news on April 7th, 2008 by equk

After finding out about the battery and looking around for ROM updates I found that it was possible to install Windows Mobile 6 onto the x50v and also that Windows Mobile 6 was a lot faster than Windows Mobile 5 as well as having some cool improvements (eg: support for SDHC Memory Cards).

The ROM image was easy to load using the SD loader.
All you need is your x50v to be updated to the relevant Dell ROM version (eg: A02) & the custom ROM image put onto a clean SD Card (FAT32).

The main differences I've noticed so far are the basic look is much nicer, the x50v seems quicker than it was when using Windows Mobile 5 and the x50v boots a lot quicker. Also a feature I didn't notice before in Internet Explorer is the "Use High Resolution" option which makes things look a lot clearer.

Dell Axim x50v battery expanded and opening door

Posted in windows, news on April 6th, 2008 by equk

Yesterday I noticed my x50v was coming up saying the battery door had been opened and found the door was bent. On opening it I noticed the battery had expanded so much that it was forcing the door to bow open.

Luckily I got 2 batteries when I bought my axim, so I just put the new one in.
I guess it is 3years old now, but it's quite surprising to see this happen.
At least it didn't blow up tho I guess.
